Roosevelt Island Race
“Were you there when the wheelchair overtook us?”
(artwork to come)
The Pioneer was motoring up the east river against a strong ebb.
As she and her crew was passing Roosevelt Island, an old man in a wheelchair rolling in the same northly direction caught sight of them. He watched them while wheeling himself along, and began to pick up speed to pass them. When he came upon the end of the island, he turned with satisfaction to wait and watch the ship strain to go by.
The crew on watch decided he did not win the race because he stopped.
